Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the cornea thins and becomes cone shaped. This results in an irregular surface & high astigmatism. In early keratoconus, vision may be improved by spectacles & soft contact lenses. However, as the condition progresses, they do not provide adequate vision for activities that required detailed vision.
At Dynamic Vision Kevern Pappin Optometrists, we provide specialized contact lens fitting for keratoconic patients, using hard contact lenses (RGPs & scleral contact lenses). With the aid of a keratograph, our optometrist will be able to have an idea of the various curvatures of the cornea. The stable surface created by the hard contact lens assists with improving the irregularity of the optical surface and hence improves the quality of vision.
Hard contact lenses also assist in complex corneal conditions and severe dry eyes from underlying systemic conditions.
